IJMB Examinations

Each candidate registering for the IJMBE is expected to offer three (3) combinable subjects at the Advanced Level relevant for the pursuance of a University degree upon successful completion of the IJMB program and where the need arises one of the Ordinary Level subjects.

The syllabus for the examination is normally reviewed every five years and the last review exercise in 2012 was undertaken to revise the subject contents in line with global changes.

The review exercise was conducted in phases, in collaboration with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) and participants were drawn from subject teachers in IJMB affiliated institutions, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and Chief Examiners of the various subjects. The revised IJMBE syllabus became operational in 2013 and candidates will be examined on the syllabus from 2014 to the next review exercise.

The revised IJMBE syllabus is expected to be covered in twelve (12) months over a two (2) semester period. The content is structured in such a way that all the topics to be covered in each semester cut across all the examinable papers in the subject so that all aspects of the syllabus are covered concurrently.

At the end of each subject syllabus, a list of basic and other reading texts is provided to guide the operators of the syllabus. For effective coverage of the syllabus, a minimum of six (6) lecture hours per week, and for subjects with practical components, an additional three (3) hours of laboratory work per week is recommended. Tutorial classes should run concurrently with the lectures.

Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) is the examination body that conducts IJMB Examinations (IJMBE) at both Ordinary and Advanced Levels.

The Ordinary Level examination is meant to remedy deficiencies in English Language and Mathematics at the same level in the WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or Cambridge (CIE) results. The Advanced Level examination is equivalent to GCE Advanced Level, Cambridge A’Level and Higher School Certificate, HSC.

Students sit for three(3) Advanced Level subjects and on successful completion, proceed to the 2nd year of undergraduate programs in various universities in the country. The results can also be used to seek admissions to universities abroad.

EXAMINATION ELIGIBILITY

IJMB examination is conducted once a year. Those eligible to sit  for the IJMB examination are holders of the following qualifications or their equivalents:

  1. The Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSCE) i.e. (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB)
  2. The General Certificate Examination (GCE) i.e. (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB)

NOTE:  IJMB programme is open to all interested candidates nationwide.

EXAMINATION STRUCTURE

IJMB consists of three subjects which are further divided into two or three papers as the subject may be. Prospective candidates are advised to seek the advice of their teachers, IJMB coordinator, and guidance or career counselor in their choice of elective subjects for the IJMB.

THE PRE-MOCK AND MOCK EXAMINATIONS

At the end of the first semester comes the pre-mock examination to test students in their chosen subjects and to further prepare them for the mock examination.

The mock examination is conducted at the end of the second-semester lecture to further test students in their respective subject areas and to prepare them for the final IJMB exams.

The pre mock and mock examinations together with class attendance form student’s continuous assessment (CA) as may be required by the IJMB Board.

IJMB EXAMINATION
IJMB examinations are conducted and supervised by the ABU IJMB Board every February. All dully registered candidates are eligible to sit for the three weeks exam. Thereafter, results are released by the ABU IJMB Board two months after the final exams.

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION THROUGH DIRECT ENTRY
After the IJMB examinations, successful candidates who have written the exams and have received their results shall go ahead to obtain a university JAMB Direct Entry Form from any JAMB offices or agents nationwide to apply to university and for the course of their choice.

In applying for Direct Entry admission into any university candidates must take the following into consideration:

A. University Catchment Areas – Every public University in Nigeria have their catchment areas. Those whose states fall within the Catchment Areas have greater chances of gaining admissions. Students should consult JAMB Direct Entry brochure for a list of universities and their catchment areas.

B. Choice of Course – Before making a choice of university, candidates must check to ensure that the institution of their choice offers the course in which they are applying for admissions.

C. Grade point – Candidates must also confirm the acceptable grade points for the course they are applying for in order to determine whether they are qualified. It should be noted that acceptable grade points differ across universities, faculties, and departments. Again, candidates with high-grade pints have a greater chance of gaining admissions.

D. Post Direct Entry Form (DE) Examinations – Applicants should also confirm if the institution of his/her choice does post Directs

Entry Examinations or not. This is because admission policies and requirements vary across institutions. If any of the institutions of the candidate’s choices does post Directs Entry Examinations he/she should confirm the Date, Time, Venue, and general examination requirements.

E. Post IJMB Counseling Services – Free counseling services are available for deserving IJMB students on the steps to take in applying for admissions through Directs Entry with IJMB Certificates/results.

Scores, Grades, Points, And Result

Scores Grades Points
70% – 100% A 5 Points
60% – 69% B 4 Points
50% – 59% C 3 Points
45% – 49% D 2 Points
40% – 44% E 1 Point

For a student that registers for (3) Subjects with grade such as Physics
(A); Chemistry
(B); Biology
(C), The total number of points scored is calculated as follows:

A bonus point is awarded to the point scored by every candidate provided he or she do not score (F) in any of the subject entered for.

Though many universities have stipulated a minimum of passes (i.e. grades E) in two(2) subjects among the three(3) subjects on offer, you will realize that general performance in the examination rather suggests these universities admit students with higher grades.

Hence, it is of utmost importance that students concentrate their efforts to secure sufficient scores for better.
