What is IJMB?
The Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) program is an advanced level program that is designed to offer an alternative to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exams.
The program is administered by various accredited centers across the country and it provides students with the opportunity to gain admission into 200 level in Nigerian universities.
History of IJMB Program
The IJMB program was established in 1976 by the Interim Common Services Agency (ICSA). The aim was to provide an alternative to JAMB and offer students who could not gain admission into universities through JAMB exams, another opportunity to gain admission.
How does IJMB Program work?
The IJMB program runs for a period of one academic session (9-10 months). During this period, students are taught by experienced teachers who are well-versed in the IJMB syllabus. The program is divided into two semesters and students are required to take three subjects in each semester, making a total of six subjects for the entire program.
At the end of the program, students are required to sit for an examination in their chosen subjects. The results of the examination are released a few weeks after the exams and successful candidates are awarded IJMB certificates which can be used to gain admission into 200 level in Nigerian universities.

The Ordinary Level examination is meant to remedy deficiencies in English Language and Mathematics at the same level in the WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or Cambridge (CIE) results. The Advanced Level examination is equivalent to GCE Advanced Level, Cambridge A’Level and Higher School Certificate, HSC.
Students sit for three(3) Advanced Level subjects and on successful completion, proceed to the 2nd year of undergraduate programs in various universities in the country. The results can also be used to seek admissions to universities abroad.
EXAMINATION ELIGIBILITY
IJMB examination is conducted once a year. Those eligible to sit for the IJMB examination are holders of the following qualifications or their equivalents:
- The Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSCE) i.e. (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB)
- The General Certificate Examination (GCE) i.e. (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB)
NOTE: IJMB programme is open to all interested candidates nationwide.

The mock examination is conducted at the end of the second-semester lecture to further test students in their respective subject areas and to prepare them for the final IJMB exams.
The pre mock and mock examinations together with class attendance form student’s continuous assessment (CA) as may be required by the IJMB Board.
IJMB EXAMINATION
IJMB examinations are conducted and supervised by the ABU IJMB Board every February. All dully registered candidates are eligible to sit for the three weeks exam. Thereafter, results are released by the ABU IJMB Board two months after the final exams.
APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION THROUGH DIRECT ENTRY
After the IJMB examinations, successful candidates who have written the exams and have received their results shall go ahead to obtain a university JAMB Direct Entry Form from any JAMB offices or agents nationwide to apply to university and for the course of their choice.
In applying for Direct Entry admission into any university candidates must take the following into consideration:
A. University Catchment Areas – Every public University in Nigeria have their catchment areas. Those whose states fall within the Catchment Areas have greater chances of gaining admissions. Students should consult JAMB Direct Entry brochure for a list of universities and their catchment areas.
B. Choice of Course – Before making a choice of university, candidates must check to ensure that the institution of their choice offers the course in which they are applying for admissions.
C. Grade point – Candidates must also confirm the acceptable grade points for the course they are applying for in order to determine whether they are qualified. It should be noted that acceptable grade points differ across universities, faculties, and departments. Again, candidates with high-grade pints have a greater chance of gaining admissions.
D. Post Direct Entry Form (DE) Examinations – Applicants should also confirm if the institution of his/her choice does post Directs
Entry Examinations or not. This is because admission policies and requirements vary across institutions. If any of the institutions of the candidate’s choices does post Directs Entry Examinations he/she should confirm the Date, Time, Venue, and general examination requirements.
E. Post IJMB Counseling Services – Free counseling services are available for deserving IJMB students on the steps to take in applying for admissions through Directs Entry with IJMB Certificates/results.
