Presently, there are 174 universities in Nigeria which include 43 Federal Universities, 52 State Universities, and 79 Private Universities.
These universities have their various undergraduate admission requirements which are based on UTME scores and WASSCE results for all the courses offered in Nigerian Universities.
Courtesy of the oil boom of the 1970s, tertiary education is fast expanding to all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria. Today, Nigeria is home to various tertiary institutions including universities, polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of education.
In fact, hardly will you find a sub-region of Nigeria that cannot boast of a tertiary institution. On this note, even the common man in Nigeria has access to education.
The popular sayings that, if education is expensive, try ignorance” is driving even more Nigerians to obtain at least a first degree from an accredited university. Many have even fallen for scams as a result of their desperation to gain admission into a university.
Interestingly, the increasing drive by Nigerians to obtain a university degree is also increasing the establishment of more universities. This, of course, is to meet the demand.
Before now, the state government and federal government in Nigeria were the only bodies licensed to establish and operate scholar’s joint universities. However, that is changed now.
Individuals, corporate organizations, and religious bodies including Christian ministries and Islamic organizations are now being licensed to establish and operate universities.
The reason for this development is obviously not far-fetched.
The population of Nigeria is ever-growing and the federal and state universities can admit only a handful of Nigerian students interested in obtaining a university degree.
Hence, the need for the establishment of more universities. Many Nigerians also believe that the standard of education in many of these federal and state universities is poor, therefore, the need for more university establishments to fill in this gap.
The elites who prefer to school in the country would rather school in a university with their class as well as in a university which boasts of almost the same standard and amenities of other schools abroad.
Additionally, many universities established by religious bodies are focused on producing well-rounded religious and academically sound students. On this ground, more universities are being established and granted licenses for operation regularly.
Nonetheless, there are numerous universities being established and operated without licenses for operation and accreditation. As a result, many Nigerians end up studying in universities unlicensed to operate or studying courses not accredited.
For one to avoid this, one should be aware of which university is accredited and which is not. This begs the question, how does one confirm if a university is accredited? And, which body accredits universities?
The National Universities Commission (NUC) is the major body in Nigeria responsible for the regulation and accreditation of Universities. The NUC grants operation licenses to universities.
It also enforces and ensures quality assurance of all academic courses offered in every Nigerian university. However, a lot of Nigerians are unaware of this fact and end up studying in universities not accredited by NUC.
For this reason, we have painstakingly put together this list of all universities accredited by NUC as of 2021. We understand that the list is being updated regularly and not everyone can keep up with new information from NUC. On this ground, the list we have compiled carries the most recent accreditation information on all universities in Nigeria.
For the sake of my readers, I have decided to give you the list of accredited Universities by NUC and their post utme application form link. Out of all the 174 universities in Nigeria, some institutions are top-ranking universities in Nigeria and globally.
